Product Reviews for Extreme Smock

Excellent service quality product.

Easy to oder from the sight, delivered promptly, had already purchased the product in black and was so impressed by the quality I decided to get it in red, to warm really for this time of year even in Scotland but I'm as sure as I can be it will be perfect when I'm having to do my usual work come the winter. Comfortable got the XL as I am just at the change from the large good as the large would be to tight.

Excellent

just got this few days now and not exactly the weather for it but it is the west coast of Scotland have used it as weather is not been great found it to be excellent so far more than warm and wind proof enough use it today and was to warm as day warmed up. Build quality is excellent sofar found no issues. The short rain bursts over the las few dreary days was handled no problem. Looking forward to giving it a more severe testing as winter approaches.

Not bad

Well made and well featured..best featured of all similar shirts...however for me big flaw is that the arms are not completely covered in fibre pile..they have thin fleece lining up the inner arm...and it's noticeably cold. No problem in other jackets with full pile arm lining bunching up so why do this in this jacket? Would recommentd jacket but need to know that 'flaw'....came as a surprise to me.

V.happy

Solid piece of kit. I’m 6ft and 80kg and the medium fits very nice. A couple of extra inches in length wouldn’t go amiss! Was a little disappointed to find the center barrel pocket lining was dethreaded and had holes in, but montane were happy to replace. I couldn’t be bothered with the faffing with postage, so decided to let the mrs on it with a needle and thread! Would recommend!! Keen to try this lighter model too tbf!

Reliable warmth

My first Montane Extreme Smock lasted 8 years of hard use and is starting to look tatty so I decided on a smart new one. The build quality has improved and the hood is even better with a better peak. But it is still a "bomber" piece of kit. It is warm and cosy even when it is wet, or when you are wet and putting it on top of wet canoe kit. It is my favourite piece of outdoor kit. For me, it replaces a waterproof jacket with a down jacket or fleece underneath. The zips mean you can vent heat or be nice and toasty. The pertex outer is "waterproof enough" for most of my adventures and with the fibre pile they make a very robust jacket - must longer lasting than a hardshell waterproof jacket.

Superb bit of kit that everyone should have.

I have just spent the day in Coire an T-Sneachda in Scotland winter climbing. On previous trips I had to layer up at the car park, then strip of during the walk in before relayering to gear up...just a faff really. So off i trotted and bought the Extreme Smock. Why didn't i have this before today. It is superb. Kept me warm standing around, well ventilated while moving and comfortable whilst climbing but above all, it saved my face from falling off with the storm flaps covering it from spin drift. Cannot rate this jacket highly enough! Thanks Montane.

Absolutely Cracking.

With heavier Pertex 6 since the Resolute was discontinued, this is completely bombproof. My go-to layer in the Norwegian winter, the smock will keep you warm and protected down to minus 30-40 if you’re moving. It is totally dependable in storms. In summer it is a great warm layer although one must admit it is bulky and heavy. It won’t rip or let you down. I used its slightly lighter predecessor as my only warm layer to just above 6000m in the Himalayas. Exudes safety - reach for it and the mountain feels just that bit more friendly, and you have a buffer between you and disaster. Get one.

A mainstay

I have two of these now (although the first was the Resolute Smock) and they are firm favourites. Most of the time it’s the only layer you need. I’ll wear it next to the skin for all manner of adventures and vent when it’s warm and add a base layer when the temperature drops. I prefer the Resolute (take note Montane) as the outer shell is more hard wearing with high abrasion areas and an intergrated hood. A classic.

Great Smock

Love the vents on this smock while climbing. Side vents and the one on the chest work great. The hood is also fantastic being snug. The groin strap is also a great touch and stops it riding up due to the movement of your backpack. Love it.

Everything I expected

This is a great piece of kit. I have been wearing this with just a thin t-shirt underneath and it has been plenty warm enough even when the temperature dropped below -2°c The only drawback I find is that it’s pretty difficult getting out of (no problem getting in) and when I receive mine there was a slight imperfection on the left sleeve (looked like a very tiny burn hole about 1mm across , as if it had been caught on something) this wasn’t worth sending back and if it gets worse ill patch it with insulation tape. The material (pertex) also seems a little ‘fragile’ and ‘flimsy’ and looks as if it could catch easily on branches, twigs if out hiking. Although luckily this hasn’t happened yet. Very warm and 99.999% wind proof, I’d certainly recommend.

Better than Buffalo

I've previously owned the Buffalo Mountain Shirt and whilst I was extremely impressed with it theres just a few things let it down in terms of poor pocket layout and also a draft through the side venting zips when closed. The Montane addresses all these issues - no drafts, pocket layout is excellent and better adjustment tabs - plus the hood is a bonus whether attached to the jacket or purely operate as a hat when required. The sleep side pocket is ideal for storing the removable crotch strap when not in use.

Montane Extreme Smock - Excellent bit of kit

I purchased this Smock as an addition to my field kit, as the issue fleece can quite hack it in deep winter at altitude. Although the Extreme Smock is slightly bigger than it's competition, I have found it to be much warmer than the Special 6, made by Buffalo, that I tried. Also it comes with a hood which is excellent as it keeps almost your entire head warm. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for extreme cold weather warm kit as it is possibly the best bit of kit I own, also excellent value for money as it's lasted me many years.

Stellar bit of kit

I've owned two Extreme Smocks. The original - with press studs around the neck - is still doing duty as a gardening jersey decades after I bought it. The second is still going strong. This jacket will see you through the worst of the weather on the hill in comfort, and is versatile too. I've worn mine ice climbing, hill walking, mountain biking, snowboarding and as a base layer in camp. It's a go to bit of kit and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a third when my second eventually wears out!

Makes me look forward to the bad weather

After much research I bought the Extreme Smock in preference to the competitors products due to the included hood and under-gusset strap This was the first Montane product I bought and the quality is first class, it has rapidly become my favourite piece of kit. If it has any downsides at all, it's that it can be a little too warm for all but the coldest of days. If you're on the fence just buy one, you wont be disappointed.

Cracking smock

Excellent piece of kit, kept me warm and dry in hail on snowdon while being very comfortable. I've only recently started using Montane kit but it's all excellent, so good I've ended up with loads of it even though I didn't nessiceraly need it.
