Introducing Julio Cernuda Aldecoa

Forest engineer, mountain guide, mountain refuge guard “Refugio la Ardilla Real”, founder of the Sports Club Valdeón Mountain, and organizer of the trail race Transvaldeónica. Montane are proud to have Julio representing Team Montane and he will be racing in this year’s Montane Tor des Géants (2016).

Julio’s passion for the mountains naturally led him to want to live and work there; he manages the Ardilla Real mountain refuge in Valdeon Valley, in the heart of the European Peaks. In this beautiful area of Spain he has been able to enjoy all the mountains have to offer by walking, climbing, skiing almost every day. In the last few years, he has turned his passion towards running, slowly gaining experience in the exciting world of trail running.

European Peaks is the place where he first learnt his trail running craft competing in the Travesera Integral de Picos de Europa (2013), 74km 13000m, and from then on made real progress with determination in his training, but always with the clear aim of enjoying the mountains.
In 2015, after many sacrifices, discipline and hard training, Julio went to Aosta Valley to take part in the hardest trail race in the world, the Montane Tor des Géants. A unique adventure where the mountains are the main protagonists, and the extreme weather conditions set the pace of the race, Julio finished the gruelling race amongst the elite in 10th position.
