MICROPLASTIC STATEMENT

The shedding of microfibres from synthetic garments is a real concern for the environment, with pollution from microplastics being discovered in our oceans. The source of the pollution comes from a wide variety of industries around the world, including the textile and apparel industry. Montane is committed to working with other apparel brands, our own suppliers and organisations such as the European Outdoor Group (EOG) to reduce our impact where possible and engage this issue as part of our FURTHER.FOREVER program.

WHAT CAN WE DO NOW?

These simple steps will help reduce the environmental impact of your gear during its lifetime:

• Built to last:  What is clear from the research already (Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, University of California, Santa Barbra), is that garments of a higher quality shed less in the wash than low-quality synthetic products, demonstrating the importance for manufactures and consumers alike to invest in gear that is built to last to work towards reducing unnecessary landfill.
  
  
• Wash less often: Microfibres shed in the wash, so wash your gear only when absolutely necessary. Follow our detailed care instruction for more information.  Consider using a cloth or sponge to spot clean rather than using the washing machine.
  
  
• Fibre Filters: You can install a permanent washing machine filter, or, you can put your synthetic clothing in a specialist filter bag before washing to catch any lost fibres. This results in significantly less fibre loss and improves the lifetime of your garment.  Products such as the award winning GUPPYFRIEND washing bag are available now.
