Excellent protective jacket but let down by the pockets
I bought this jacket for a winter mountain walking trip in Scotland in March ‘23. I’m between sizes and decided on a medium. The small was just roomy enough with a thin base and mid layer, but felt a little tight with a second or thicker mid layer. Having gone for the larger size, I can say the jacket is roomy even with multiple layers underneath without sacrificing the ability to move.
In terms of protection from the elements, the Phase XT is like a fortress, sealing out wind, rain and snow effortlessly. The multiple points of adjustment on the hood make it very versatile with or without a helmet. With a helmet, I found the fit of the hood to be snug, but still allowed largely unrestricted head movement in all directions. The jacket feels tough and built to last.
My only criticism is of the hand pockets. They are positioned too low such that they are partially covered by a rucksack waist belt. This means you really need to unclip the waist belt to access the contents inside, which is rather impractical. They need to sit about 4-5cm higher. I think this is a critical design flaw and a big oversight for a mountaineering hardshell. As far as the pockets being map sized, they are inside but it’s a struggle to cram a folded map in a map case through the zipped opening (especially due to the above issue). The opening needs to be bigger. An external napoleon style chest pocket would also be a useful addition.
Aside from the pocket problems, it is an otherwise superb jacket.

Really well made. Fits great. Particularly like the fact that it has Pit zips for ventilation. Really good face fabric and so far excellent water repellency.

Well designed as always by Montane. Not been out in any real weather yet but can tell it will be robust for the job. Loose fit for layering but comfy and warm.
