TOR DES GEANTS REPORT: DAY 6
Day 6 of the 2018 Montane Tor des Géants saw the remaining athletes on the trail continue to fall foul of the courses unforgiving terrain, and unrelenting weather.
With the heat wave failing to dissipate as expected, the TOR’s team of 120 doctors, nurses, masseurs and physiotherapists were pushed into overdrive s the event reached its twilight.
By far and away the most proliferate of ailments were foot problems – not surprising considering the nature of the event. However, the excessive heat – even at higher altitudes – caused excessive swelling and sweating inside shoes, causing pain, blisters, and other soft-tissue injuries.
Dr Patacchini, the TOR’s head physician, reported the need to dress blisters was so prevalent that 3x the predicted amount of bandages were required – a new record of 1.5km’s worth of blister tape!
Montane Athlete Jenn Gaskell finished her third TOR with a time of 133:42.35
